"After assessing everything, I really felt the best choice for the organization was a fresh start," said Gores. "As much as we want to win, we want to develop these young players."
With substantial cap space at their disposal, Langdon is tasked with bringing in new contracts and acquiring assets in a manner that bolsters the growth of the younger players. "Hopefully, with the players that come in, they can bolster the growth of the younger players. If we can interweave those two things, that would make our summer successful," he explained.
Langdon is pragmatic when it comes to setting expectations. "I don't think there's a timeframe for us to get to the playoffs. I'm extremely confident that this partnership with Trajan is going to work, that it is going to turn our franchise around."
Coaching Uncertainty
In addition to leadership changes, the Pistons are also in the midst of a coaching transition following the dismissal of Coach Monty Williams. Langdon admits there is no established timeline for appointing a new coach.
"I can't give you a timeline," he stated candidly.
The next coach will face the substantial challenge of focusing on player development. With a roster including 11 players aged 25 or younger, fostering young talent is an organizational priority that cannot be overstated.
Youthful Roster with Potential
The Pistons' young roster is headlined by Cade Cunningham, the team’s most promising player. Cunningham showcased remarkable potential this past season, averaging an impressive 22.7 points and 7.5 assists per game. His performance solidified his status as a franchise cornerstone. This offseason, he becomes eligible for a rookie-scale extension, making it imperative for Langdon to upgrade his supporting cast.
With over $60 million in cap space, the Pistons could make significant moves this offseason. Langdon is open to making trades that benefit both the short and long term.
