Justin Herbert's Injury Status Remains Uncertain for Week 4
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert's status for the upcoming Week 4 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs remains in flux following a series of injury developments over the past few weeks. Herbert, who sustained a high ankle sprain during Week 2’s game against the Carolina Panthers, underwent an MRI on Monday to assess the condition of his ailing ankle.
The MRI results showed that Herbert’s ankle injury is making progress, but his availability for the pivotal divisional clash is still uncertain. This uncertainty looms large for a Chargers team that regards Herbert as a rare talent and a cornerstone player within the franchise.
During Wednesday's practice, Herbert was listed as 'limited,' further indicating that the team is taking a cautious approach with their star quarterback. This comes after an incident-filled game in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Herbert entered as questionable due to his ongoing ankle issues. Compounding matters, he exited early in the third quarter following a sack that exacerbated his injury. Herbert was seen limping post-injury and sought immediate attention in the medical tent before being ruled out for the remainder of the game. Backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke stepped in to take over the reins for the rest of the contest.
Head Coach Jim Harbaugh was adamant about his decision-making process regarding Herbert's health. "As soon as I saw Justin get up -- first sign of any limp, he was coming out of the game. I took him out," Harbaugh stated, emphasizing the importance of player safety. "The other [decision] would be, 'No, you can’t play. We’re going to take it out of your hands and [not] let a warrior be a warrior.' That doesn’t resonate with me."
Herbert's high ankle sprain, which initially occurred in Week 2 against the Panthers, has clearly been a lingering issue. Even though progress is being made as shown in the latest MRI results, the road to recovery seems delicate. Harbaugh reiterated the team's strategic approach: "We're going to evaluate and get treatment." The Chargers’ medical team continues to work diligently to get Herbert back to full strength, but the timeline remains uncertain.
Herbert’s absence was keenly felt after he left the game against the Steelers. Seen in a walking boot post-game, it was evident that the injury had taken a toll. Despite the setbacks, Herbert's contributions this season have been invaluable. "And it’s Justin Herbert. They don't make them like him. I thought he did great," Harbaugh noted, underscoring Herbert's exceptional skills and importance to the team.
The Chargers are now preparing for a critical AFC West showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs. Herbert’s status will continue to be closely monitored as game day approaches. The team’s coaching staff, led by Harbaugh, remains vigilant in making the right decision regarding their star player's return to the field.
Until a definitive decision is made, the Chargers will likely continue to involve Heinicke in their game plans, ensuring they are prepared for any scenario. Herbert’s resilience and talent have been a cornerstone of the Chargers' success, and fans and teammates alike are hopeful for his quick recovery.
